RingScheduler™ - Frequently Asked Questions

What does RingScheduler do?

RingScheduler allows you to set how your phone rings (i.e., set your sound profile) by: (1) time of day and day of week; and (2) based on your calendar appointments. You can also set exceptions for selected contacts.
You can use RingScheduler to automatically prevent your phone from making noise during inappropriate or inconvenient times, while at the same time alerting you when certain people are trying to call you. Never again will you have to manually turn off your ringer and then miss important calls because you forgot to turn it back on!

What does CellAvant do?

In addition to developing BlackBerry applications like RingScheduler, CellAvant develops custom consumer and enterprise BlackBerry applications as a service. Contact us at info@cellavant.com to discuss your project today.

What is Set Default Sound Profile?

Your default sound profile (e.g., Normal, Loud, Vibrate Only, etc.) is how your phone will sound when you are NOT in an active RingScheduler rule. To set your default sound profile, select RingScheduler from your BlackBerry device Options list, and press the "Set Default Sound Profile" button. You can tailor any of these sound profiles by selecting "Sounds" from your BlackBerry desktop.

How do Impromptu Rules work?

You can schedule an on-the-spot rule to change your ringer (sound profile) for a set amount of time, after which it will automatically go back to your default setting. To do this, press the Menu button from almost any screen on your BlackBerry, and you will see a menu item called "Schedule Ringer Now". You can select the time duration and sound profile, press OK, and your phone will change its ringer setting. At the end of the time period that you selected, the phone will automatically return to your default ringer (sound profile) setting. To cancel this rule before the time period elapses, press this Menu item again and click on "Cancel Impromptu Rule".

How do Calendar-Based Rules work?

To set calendar-based rules, select RingScheduler from your BlackBerry device Options list, and press the "Set Calendar Based Rule" button. You can choose what Sound Profile (e.g., Normal, Loud, Vibrate Only, etc.) you would like your phone to use for: (1) all calendar appointments; or (2) calendar appointments where the time is or is not set to free, tentative, busy, or out of office; or (3) calendar appointments with certain keyword(s) in the subject of the appointment. Note that calendar-based rules take priority over any conflicting time-based rules.

How do Time Rules work?

To set time-based rules, select RingScheduler from your BlackBerry device Options list, and press the "Set Time Based Rules" button. You can choose what Sound Profile (e.g., Normal, Loud, Vibrate Only, etc.) you would like your phone to use during certain times of the day and for certain days of the week. Where two time-based rules overlap, RingScheduler will invoke the rule with the most recent start time. Note that your calendar-based rule and any impromptu rule that you set will take priority over a conflicting time-based rule.

How can I tell what rule is active?

On the main settings screen located under the BlackBerry device Options (select "RingScheduler" from the list), you will see your current sound profile, the currently-active rule, and the expiration day/time of the currently-active rule.

How do Exceptions work?

To set exceptions, select RingScheduler from your BlackBerry device Options list, and press the "Set Exceptions" button. You can select to be notified with a vibration, sound, or both when certain contacts are calling you. For example, you can have your ringer (sound profile) set to "silent" overnight or during important meetings (by setting a time-based rule, calendar-based rule, or impromptu rule), but be notified when, for example, your child, spouse, or boss is trying to call you. Note that exceptions only apply when your sound profile is set to Vibrate, Silent, or Alerts Off.

What are Holster Settings?

RingScheduler cannot change your ringer (sound profile) when your device is holstered, so you can set an alert that will go off when RingScheduler needs to change your ringer (sound profile) while your phone is holstered. To set your holster settings, select RingScheduler from your BlackBerry device Options list, and press the "Holster Settings" button. In addition to a solid indicator light, you can also choose vibrate, sound, or both, and you can opt to have this alert repeat until you un-holster the phone. As soon as you un-holster the phone, RingScheduler will change your sound profile and you can then re-holster your device.

What are Advanced Settings?

If you have added custom sound profiles to your BlackBerry, you will need to add them to RingScheduler in order to use them. To add your custom sound profiles, select RingScheduler from your BlackBerry device Options list, and press the "Advanced Settings" button.

My ringer settings (sound profile) is not adjusting when my phone is holstered.

RingScheduler cannot change your ringer (sound profile) when your device is holstered, so you can set an alert that will go off when RingScheduler needs to change your ringer (sound profile) while your phone is holstered. See "What are Holster Settings" above.

My ringer settings (sound profile) is not adjusting when my phone is locked and password protected.

RingScheduler cannot change your ringer (sound profile) when your device is both locked and password protected, so you can set an alert that will go off when RingScheduler needs to change your ringer (sound profile) while your phone is locked and password protected (same as Holster Settings).

My ringer settings (sound profile) is not adjusting when it should and all I see is a list of sound profiles but then nothings happens.

In order for RingScheduler to be able to change your ringer settings (sound profile), you must set certain application permissions to "Allow". To fix this, go to Options->Advanced Options->Applications, highlight RingScheduler in the list, press the Menu button, and select "Edit Permissions". Make sure "Input Simulation" or "Keystroke Injection" (located under "Interactions") is set to "Allow" and reboot your phone by removing and then re-inserting the battery.

I manually changed my sound profile (i.e., outside of the RingScheduler application) and on the RingScheduler settings screen, the current sound profile is showing something different than what I manually changed it to.

RingScheduler is unable to detect your current sound profile if you manually change it outside of the RingScheduler application. To avoid this issue, when you want to manually change your ringer, do so by setting an on-the-spot rule – See "How do Impromptu Rules work?" above.
